Minnesota Land Use

CSE’S CONTRIBUTION

CSE’s contribution to the land use planning process will be to create a "roadmap". The roadmap will provide a foundation and direction for local planning to take place in the regional and national context. The roadmap will contain three major components:

Franklin Mine, 1932, by Dewey Albison(1) Identification of issues and questions: What are the concerns of the various stakeholder groups? Are the right questions being asked about how the environment and the economy function in this region? How do the various stakeholder organizations interact? After a review of the data and input from stakeholders, CSE team members will identify the key issues and questions to be addressed by the local/regional planning and decision making process.

(2) Recommendations on planning data and methods: CSE will evaluate the current status of data, plans, models, etc., and provide recommendations about what is needed, how to go about getting it, and what the best sequence of steps is to move forward.

The roadmap will link various recommendations and provide a visual schematic of how to integrate relevant data, models, and stakeholder input in addressing pertinent questions. The model will also present an outline for integrating ecological, economic, and institutional issues into a process that makes sense, has credibility and provides an understandable set of steps at local, regional, and state levels.

One of the goals of the project is to facilitate an "open decision making process." A land use planning issues survey is located in this site for interested to parties to complete and transmit to CSE scientists. We would appreciate any comments or information you would like to share with us about local and regional planning issues in northern Minnesota.
