Peter Schuyler

Professional Experience:
2004 - present Island Restoration Ecologist: Self employed. Technical and strategic consulting on variety of conservation issues, including endangered species restoration, ecosystem research and management programs, invasive species control and mitigation projects. Developed and wrote project funding proposals. Clients include the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy, Rusack Vineyards, and The Nature Conservancy.
1997 – 2004 Director of Ecological Restoration: Santa Catalina Island Conservancy. Responsibility for conservation and protection efforts on a 42,000 acre island nature preserve. Duties: designed, implemented and supervised stewardship, monitoring and research programs on a wide variety of topics including endangered species (plant and animal) protection and restoration, invasive species control (plant and animal), and ecosystem restoration. Supervised full time staff of 10 and contract staff of up to 15 people. Integrated management efforts with local community of 3,500 residents and island visitation by 1 million visitors/year. Increased organizational capacity for undertaking conservation and research projects through coordination of restoration workshops, development of department grant proposals and fundraising responsibilities. Served as member of organization’s executive staff, participating in strategic planning, community forums, and long term conservation planning.
1991- 1997 Natural Areas Reserves Program Manager: State of Hawaii Division of Forestry & Wildlife. State-wide administrative responsibility for natural area reserve system (19 reserves), 1 national estuarine research reserve, and 7 state/private cooperative projects. Oversaw $4.5 million budget. Developed program policies, rules, and management plans. Participated on working groups and task forces involving academic, professional and community members to resolve resource management issues, such as restoring critically endangered species, control of non-native plants and animals, and ecosystem level management concerns.
1991 - 1992 Biological Consultant: Office of Technology Assessment / United States Congress. Prepared selected analyses of survey data on introduced animal species issues and concerns for Congressional report.
1990 Research Intern: The Nature Conservancy. Proposed, developed and completed feasibility study for an international, multi-disciplinary center to address issues created by the presence of introduced animal species in natural areas.
1986 – 1989 Preserve Director - Santa Cruz Island: The Nature Conservancy. Overall responsibility for 55,000 acre nature preserve, including: oversight of stewardship, monitoring, and research programs; strategic planning; community, agency, and landowner liaison. Supervised CA Conservancy's statewide prescribed burn program.
1980 – 1986 Preserve Manager - Santa Cruz Island: The Nature Conservancy. On-site preserve management responsibility for 55,000 acre nature preserve, including design and implementation of major invasive species control programs; establishment of resource monitoring and research projects, extensive development and educational.
1980 Teaching Associate - Geography Department: Univ. of California at Santa Barbara.
1979 – 1980 Native Plant Groundsman: Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
1978 Agricultural Credit Technician: United States Peace Corps / Philippines. Supervised implementation of agricultural projects by small, rural farmers using locally borrowed bank funds.
